Overview
Special days help us remember historic events, strengthen cultural awareness and inspire New Brunswickers to act or get involved in important causes.
Official provincial declarations are one way to recognize special days. Government can also recognize and observe established special days through social media, statements in the legislature, or participation in events. Some national or international special days are marked by illuminating the Legislative Assembly building or flag raisings.
Declarations are granted annually which means organizations need to make the request each year for an official provincial declaration.
Examples of past declarations include Black History Month, National Nursing Week and Pink Shirt Day.
Upon approval, an original signed copy of the declaration will be sent to the request address.
Request a provincial declaration
Organizations, not individuals, may request special provincial recognition of an important day, week or month. Requests should only be made once per calendar year.
Submission must be made at least 30 days in advance to ensure adequate time for approvals, translation and delivery.
Declarations for a special day, week or month must:
- recognize important events, milestones, and organizations that directly impact or connect with New Brunswick
- be apolitical
- not be offensive
- adhere to the principles in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and New Brunswick Human Rights Act
- be submitted using the template (hyperlink template)
Organizations must submit a new request each year for annually recurring occasions or events. Each occasion is subject to the same review process.
Declaration requests will not be considered if they are submitted:
- fewer than 30 days before the date of the day, week or month
- more than six months before the date of the day, week or month
- for dates that have already passed
