FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Boyce Farmers’ Market in Fredericton is receiving nearly $1 million in government funding for upgrades.

“For 74 years, the Boyce Farmers’ Market has played an important role in our food system, been a cherished part of Fredericton’s weekend routine, and been a key attraction for visitors to the region,” said Premier Susan Holt. “Supporting your local farmers markets is a great way to connect directly with our farmers, food producers, artisans and other local vendors, and support our local economy. Today’s investment helps make the market accessible for everyone and ensures that it will remain a staple in our community, and at our kitchen table, for years to come.”

The upgrades will improve accessibility, reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and modernize facilities while preserving the market’s historic charm. Enhancements will include removal of the raised stage, energy-efficient lighting fixtures and roofing work, along with the installation of solar panels.

"I'm so pleased that our government is supporting the city of Fredericton's Boyce Farmers’ Market,” said Fredericton-Oromocto MP David Myles. “As someone who values the heart and soul of our community, I know how important it is to invest in places that bring us together, support local businesses and help our region thrive."

Myles attended for federal Justice Minister Sean Fraser, who is also minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The provincial government is providing $496,401 through the Regional Development Corporation while the federal government is investing $500,000 through ACOA.

“The Fredericton Boyce Farmers’ Market is an iconic fixture of our city, and we are pleased the federal and provincial governments recognize the importance of this location for our local economy and for our residents,” said Mayor Kate Rogers. “Upgrades will ensure a modernized experience and guarantee the market remains a space for the community to come together every Saturday.”

This is a multi-year project that will allow operations to continue and minimize the impact on vendors.

“As one of the top ten markets in Canada and a weekend tradition for residents and visitors alike, we are delighted our much-loved market will be receiving upgrades with the support of the federal and provincial governments,” said Stacey Russell, chair of the market’s board of directors. “With these upgrades we will be able to support marketgoers for generations to come.”
