HUNTSVILLE, Ont. (GNB) – The governments of New Brunswick and Manitoba have signed a memorandum of understanding on free trade and labour mobility.
“New Brunswick is committed to working closely with our neighbouring provinces to create a strong and free Canadian economy and create more opportunities for New Brunswick businesses and products to shine across the country,” said Premier Susan Holt. “This is the third memorandum of understanding we’ve signed with other jurisdictions, and it will further help us to create more opportunity for our businesses to thrive in new markets, both within New Brunswick and across Canada.”
Similar memorandums were signed in April with the governments of Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador.
“This agreement reflects Manitoba’s ongoing efforts to build a stronger, more unified Canadian economy; one where goods, services and workers can move more freely between provinces, while maintaining the highest standards for health and safety,” said Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew. “By working with partners across the nation, we are unlocking opportunities for people and businesses and building up this country we all love so much.”
Several amendments were passed during the last legislative session, aimed at improving labour mobility and reducing internal barriers in the alcoholic beverages sector. These will also require regulatory changes that are now in development.
Amendments to the Fair Registration Practices in Regulated Professions Act allow eligible workers from another province or territory to begin working in regulated professions in New Brunswick during the registration process. Amendments to the Liquor Control Act enable New Brunswickers to participate in the direct-to-consumer sales of alcoholic beverages and eliminate personal exemption limits for liquor.
