FREDERICTON (GNB) – The governments of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island have signed a memorandum of understanding on free trade and labour mobility.

“New Brunswick has what the world wants, and this is another step to creating opportunities for our people and products to shine across the country,” said Premier Susan Holt. “Prince Edward Island is our much-loved neighbour, and we look forward to having more co-operation across the Confederation Bridge.”

Similar memorandums have been signed with the governments of Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador and Manitoba.

“New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island have always worked closely together,” said Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lantz. “This agreement builds on that relationship by making it easier for people to move, work and do business across our shared region.”

Several amendments were passed during the last legislative session, aimed at improving labour mobility and reducing internal barriers in the alcoholic beverages sector. These will also require regulatory changes that are now in development.

Amendments to the Fair Registration Practices in Regulated Professions Act allow eligible workers from another province or territory to begin working in regulated professions in New Brunswick during the registration process. Amendments to the Liquor Control Act enable New Brunswickers to participate in the direct-to-consumer sales of alcoholic beverages and eliminate personal exemption limits for liquor.
