FREDERICTON (GNB) – The government has initiated a review of the Right to Information and Protection of Privacy Act to enhance public access to information and reduce restrictive rules.

“As a government, we are committed to open, transparent and accountable governance,” said Finance and Treasury Board Minister René Legacy. “This reform aims to ensure our laws align with evolving public expectation and digital innovations while protecting personal information. Our government promised to modernize right-to-information legislation, and we will deliver exactly that.”

This review will also allow the government to meet obligations under Section 86.1 of the act, which mandates a comprehensive review be carried out every four years to ensure improvements and accountability. The last review was done in 2022.

Public engagements will play a central role in shaping the revised legislation, said Legacy. There will be consultations with stakeholders such as review bodies, First Nations, municipalities, public bodies and experts, as well as the public.

New Brunswickers are invited to review a discussion paper, which is available online, and provide their input before Sept. 12.

Submissions are welcome through an online survey or by emailing [email protected]. They may also be mailed to: RTIPPA Review, Office of the Chief Information Officer, Finance and Treasury Board, P.O. Box 6000, Fredericton, N.B., E3B 1E9.
