MONCTON (GNB) – Two new eight-unit public housing developments will soon improve access to affordable housing and support services in Moncton.

The New Brunswick Housing Corporation commissioned a non-profit group, Rising Tide, to build five eight-unit housing developments. Sites on McAleese Lane, Botsford Avenue and Norwood Avenue have already opened, and tenants are expected to move into two more sites, on Main Street and Lewisville Road, this fall.

“It’s great to see these new units coming into the market, offering citizens a safe place to call home,” said David Hickey, minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “We know the need is great, and we’re happy to work with partners to get new buildings up and running as quickly as we can.”

Tenants will have 24-hour on-site support related to independent living skills, budgeting and financial literacy, education and employment, mental health, addictions and primary health care. This support is offered in partnership with Social Development and the John Howard Society of Southeastern New Brunswick.

“We understand how important it is to meet people where they are, and to be able to offer the right kinds of support,” said Social Development Minister Cindy Miles. “Having a safe home gives you the chance to breathe, to grow, and to feel like you have a place in the world – and that’s incredibly important.”

The New Brunswick Housing Corporation has a variety of housing programs for renters and property owners to help address the government’s affordability and housing commitments.

There are now nearly 3,900 public housing units across the province, with plans to open more before the end of the year. Work continues on 127 more public housing units at 13 sites.
