SAINT JOHN (GNB) – Two new public housing developments slated to open in the coming months will improve access to affordable housing for working-age people in Saint John.

A 10-unit modular complex for non-elderly singles on Boars Head Road is nearing completion and is expected to start welcoming tenants later this year. Another 10-unit modular development on Woodward Avenue, geared toward the same kind of tenants, is expected to be ready for occupants early next year.

“Finding a safe, affordable place to live in Saint John has become a challenge,” said David Hickey, minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “When these new buildings are complete, they’ll provide 20 new units for the city, which will have a positive impact on the affordable housing market.”

There are now nearly 4,700 public housing units across the province, with more expected to open before the end of the year.

“The team is working hard to build and open new public housing units as a way to bolster the existing market for renters,” said Hickey.

The corporation has a variety of housing programs for renters and property owners to help address the government’s affordability and housing commitments.

Work is underway on 101 additional public housing units at 10 sites across the province.
