CAMPBELLTON (GNB) – A family health team has been formed in Campbellton.
The team at the Campbellton Medical Centre consists of three physicians, a licensed practical nurse and a social worker. A nurse practitioner will join in October. The team has already taken on 2,700 patients, which helped offset two retirements. The goal is to provide care for an additional 1,500 to 2,000 patients.
“This team will help thousands of New Brunswickers in Restigouche County get the primary care they need, right here at home,” said Premier Susan Holt. “We committed to Campbellton being one of the first 10 places to get a community care clinic, and we’re proud to be here to do that today. By continuing to invest in the shift to a collaborative, flexible, community-based primary care system, New Brunswickers will get better and faster access to care.”
The government is investing $600,000 in this family health team, which includes funding for human resources, as well as some renovations to the clinic space.
The three physicians successfully completed the Practice Ready Assessment New Brunswick program, which helps internationally trained physicians become licensed and work in the province.
“Team-based care is not only the model we know we need for better patient care; it also means better support for primary care providers,” said Health Minister John Dornan. “This collaborative model is attractive to physicians and nurse practitioners, and we are proud that the primary care providers coming together to form this team have chosen to practise in our province to provide essential care to New Brunswickers.”
The government has committed to creating at least 30 local collaborative family health teams across the province. Regional health authorities have been working with health professionals to create family health teams that meet the needs of each community.
“The creation of this new family health team is excellent news for access to primary care in the Campbellton region,” said Dr. France Desrosiers, president and CEO of Vitalité Health Network. “We are proud to welcome physicians who have chosen New Brunswick to share their expertise and work together to meet the health needs of our population.”
Patients without access to a primary care provider are encouraged to sign up with NB Health Link.
