FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Social Development Minister Cindy Miles in recognition of National Foster Family Week, Oct. 17-24:

National Foster Family Week is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the generosity and dedication of the many foster families across New Brunswick who open their hearts and homes to children and youth.

While the goal is always to support families so children can remain in their care, foster families play a vital role when that is not possible. These families provide safe, caring and nurturing environments for hundreds of children under the government’s care, helping them heal, grow and live their best lives. They often work closely with community partners and the child’s family to ensure the best possible support is provided.

The Department of Social Development continues to focus on recruiting and supporting more foster families across the province. Today, 362 foster homes are providing children and youth with the stability, encouragement and love they need to thrive. Their compassion and commitment deserve our deepest gratitude and respect.

Anyone who would like to learn more about becoming a foster parent can call the department at 1-833-733-7835 or visit its website.

To all of New Brunswick’s remarkable foster families – thank you for the hope, resilience and sense of belonging you bring to the lives of children and youth every day.
