MEMRAMCOOK (GNB) – The Village of Memramcook has been designated as the province’s 17th age-friendly community.

“Our government understands how important it is that seniors have the right supports in place at the right time, and to feel a connection to their communities,” said Lyne Chantal Boudreau, minister responsible for seniors. “I am heartened to see another community join this important network.”

The recognition program is administered by the Department of Social Development in partnership with the Association francophone des aînés du Nouveau-Brunswick and Age-Friendly Active Communities of New Brunswick. It is designed to encourage communities to take sustainable action to become welcoming places for all ages and to promote healthy aging and wellness.

“This recognition reflects our commitment, as a municipality, to building a community where active, healthy aging with dignity and respect is fully valued,” said Memramcook Mayor Maxime O. Bourgeois. “It strengthens intergenerational ties and the social fabric of our community, while promoting the social and civic participation of our seniors, so that everyone can age in a safe, welcoming environment.”

The program provides support to communities in their efforts to become age-friendly. This often involves improving infrastructure to increase accessibility for seniors, including with transportation, outdoor spaces and housing. Efforts are also made to promote social inclusion, intergenerational opportunities and active living for all residents.

To receive recognition, communities must have completed four milestones adopted from the World Health Organization. These are based upon community engagement and taking sustainable action, and include passing a resolution; establishing an advisory committee; assessing the community; and developing and implementing an action plan designed to support healthy aging in the community.

More information about the program is available online.
