FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation has launched a new award celebrating individuals and organizations working to reduce poverty in New Brunswick.
“The Economic and Social Inclusion Award honours the people and organizations who are lighting the way toward a more inclusive New Brunswick,” said Social Development Minister Cindy Miles, who is also minister responsible for the corporation. “Their efforts reduce poverty, strengthen communities and inspire all of us to act with respect and compassion. I thank them for their passion and dedication to all New Brunswickers.”
Awards will be presented each year in four categories: non-profits, businesses, citizens and government. Miles said the awards will highlight initiatives that serve as a beacon of hope for those in need.
The announcement was made today as the corporation marks International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which honours the perseverance of those living in poverty and calls on people to listen, act respectfully and support effectively. This year’s theme, as chosen by the United Nations, is Ending social and institutional maltreatment by ensuring respect and effective support for families.
“People and organizations do great things every day to help lift others up,” said Shelley Clayton, who chairs the corporation’s board of directors. “We hope this award shines a light on their efforts and inspires others to follow in their footsteps.”
More information on the Economic and Social Inclusion Award is available on a website that tracks progress on the corporation’s updated poverty reduction plan, which was released in February. The site also has information on the plan’s three pillars (basic needs and well-being, income security and connecting people to their benefits) and highlights partnerships related to 211 NB, the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program and community transportation.
The Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation is a Crown corporation that co-ordinates and implements the Overcoming Poverty Together strategy. Its board of directors consists of members representing government, business, community non-profits and people who have experienced poverty.
