CAMPBELLTON (GNB) – The government is investing in two community projects in the Restigouche region: $41,000 to support accessibility upgrades at the Restigouche Snowmobile Club, and $70,000 toward the purchase of a new off-road rescue unit to enhance emergency response services in the area.
“By supporting accessibility upgrades at the Restigouche Snowmobile Club, we are ensuring that important community spaces remain inclusive,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “By investing in a new off-road rescue unit, first responders have the necessary tools they need to reach people quickly in remote areas.”
The investment at the snowmobile club will improve accessibility for people with reduced mobility. The upgrades will allow the club to operate year-round, expand its community programming, and ensure that people of all ages and abilities can participate in social, recreational and cultural activities.
“We want to thank the province for the support for renovations that make the club accessible and welcoming to residents and tourists travelling through the region,” said club president Brad Mann. “The Restigouche Snowmobile Club is the last stop on Trail 17, which is a gateway to Quebec and the United States, so it is an important part of our tourism infrastructure.”
The off-road rescue unit addresses a priority identified in the Restigouche Regional Service Commission’s five-year strategy. It will be based in Campbellton, with an attachment – an enclosed sled-like device – to be kept in Kedgwick to support winter operations.
“The off-road rescue unit gives our firefighters the ability to respond quickly and safely when an accident occurs in remote areas where every second counts,” said Denis McIntyre, chair of the Restigouche Regional Service Commission’s public safety committee. “Whether it’s on the trails, in the woods or on rugged terrain, this equipment and investment strengthen our ability to keep residents and visitors safe – and save lives – while they enjoy the natural beauty of Restigouche.”
