FREDERICTON (GNB) – The government is investing $10 million to make home care support more affordable for seniors and people with disabilities.

“Investing in home care is not only the right thing to do, but it is one of the smartest investments we can make as a government to get the outcomes that seniors want,” said Lyne Chantal Boudreau, minister responsible for seniors. “Those who wish to age in place and remain in their homes as long as is safely possible should be able to do so. Affordable home care will give them this ability.”

This investment increases income thresholds for Social Development’s long-term care and disability support programs for the first time in nearly 30 years.

The annual income thresholds will increase by 10 per cent:

·         to $27,500 from $25,000 for singles

·         to $38,500 from $35,000 for couples

·         to $55,000 from $50,000 for couples with one dependent

This change is expected to give more people access to these programs and will also affect the subsidies of about 2,100 of the department’s existing clients.

“Everyone should have the freedom to make empowered choices about their care,” said Social Development Minister Cindy Miles. “This investment will help people remain in their homes and communities as long as it is safe to do so, which benefits individuals, families and our health-care system as a whole.”

No application process is necessary for existing Social Development clients. The change will be applied to their subsidies beginning Jan. 1.

“This is an important step in the right direction, and it signals a growing recognition of what seniors and their families have been asking for: the ability to remain safely and comfortably in their own homes,” said Tina Learmonth, president of the New Brunswick Home Support Association. “We must work together to strengthen the home support workforce, expand access to services, and ensure providers have the tools they need to deliver high-quality care to New Brunswickers.”
