Premier’s Council on Disabilities
December 02, 2025
FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Premier’s Council on Disabilities will hold its annual event Wednesday to recognize Dec. 3 as the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992, the day encourages people, organizations, governments and communities around the world to focus on issues related to the inclusion of people with disabilities and the actions needed to support full participation and equality.
This year’s global theme is Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.
“Each year, this day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the progress we’ve made and the work that remains,” said Christyne Allain, executive director of the council. “Accessibility and inclusion are strengthened when persons with disabilities lead the conversation. Their voices, ideas and experiences must guide the policies and solutions that shape our future.”
To mark the day, the council will host an event in partnership with Makers Making Change, an initiative of the Neil Squire Society.
Volunteers will gather at the Crowne Plaza Fredericton-Lord Beaverbrook to adapt toys and devices so that children of all abilities can use and enjoy them. Once completed, the items will be donated to children with disabilities as part of the annual Hacking for the Holidays campaign.
“We continue to be inspired by the community members who come out each year to support this initiative,” said council chair Nick Taggart. “When people come together to remove barriers, big or small, we create opportunities for every child to participate fully. These adapted toys will not only bring joy but also reinforce the message that inclusion matters.”
Taggart said this event highlights the council’s ongoing commitment to advancing accessibility and showcases how collaborative efforts can create positive change for children, families and communities throughout the province.
