FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has tabled a $1.47-billion capital budget for 2026-27. This is more than $211 million above the budget tabled last year.
“By investing in our infrastructure and economy, we are investing in New Brunswickers,” said Finance and Treasury Board Minister René Legacy. “There are major headwinds facing our economy, especially in a tariff environment, but this capital budget signals we are ready to stimulate the economy at a time when New Brunswickers need us.”
Health care
Improving health care is the number one priority for the government, which is investing more than $247 million in health-care infrastructure. The government will invest $205 million of that in renovations, additions and other improvements at hospitals around the province, and another $42 million will help replace aging capital equipment in the health-care system.
Education
With added pressure on the education system due to increased enrolment, the government will invest more than $242 million in schools. That amount includes almost $193 million to continue work that has already begun, and an additional $36 million for improvements, equipment and ventilation upgrades.
Housing
As part of its commitment to the development of new public housing, and maintenance of existing housing, the government is investing $78.1 million.
Economic development
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s $680-million budget accounts for almost half of the government’s capital budget. More than $540 million is for improvements to roads, bridges, ferries and other transportation assets. An additional $20 million is being invested in maintenance and improvements for tourism infrastructure and heritage sites.
“We promised to invest in areas like health care, housing, education and ways to make life more affordable,” said Legacy. “Despite many economic challenges, we have stepped up with a plan that New Brunswickers can believe in; a plan they can trust.”
