SAINT JOHN (GNB) – A 152-unit development in uptown Saint John will help address the city’s housing crunch, thanks to investments from the federal, provincial and municipal governments.

“This is a huge win for Saint John, and I’m so pleased that all three levels of government are coming together to improve access to affordable housing for New Brunswickers, particularly in this region, where those kinds of places can be hard to come by,” said David Hickey, minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “A total of 32 units in this development will be made available to seniors and people with disabilities as affordable housing.”

With funding from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Apartment Construction Loan Program, the project will feature one level of underground parking, a floor with retail and commercial space, and multiple floors of affordable and working-class housing units.

The federal government will contribute more than $46 million in low-cost loans, while the New Brunswick Housing Corporation will provide about $2.2 million through its Affordable Rental Housing Program. The City of Saint John will invest $310,000 in the project.

Construction is expected to be completed by fall of 2026.

“Through investments in rental housing, our government is providing assistance to those who need it most, here in New Brunswick and across the country,” said federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson. “We are committed to revitalizing communities through initiatives like this one. These investments are helping to create jobs and stimulate the local economy.”

The Apartment Construction Loan Program has a budget of $55 billion and was created to support construction of more than 131,000 rental homes across Canada by 2031-32. It provides low-interest loans to developers to encourage construction of more rentals for middle-class Canadians.
