FREDERICTON (GNB) – Property assessment notices for the 2026 taxation year have been mailed to property owners.
A one-year freeze on the value for taxation – the value used for calculating property taxes – is in place to protect eligible property owners from increased taxes due to an increase in assessment value, as work continues to overhaul the province’s property tax system. The amount of the value for taxation for 2026, with some exceptions, remains at the 2025 level and should benefit the owners of about 430,000 properties.
“Assessment notices will be delivered in the coming days, and most property owners will see their value for taxation remain unchanged from 2025,” said Local Government Minister Aaron Kennedy, who is also minister responsible for Service New Brunswick. “This one-year freeze is about providing stability and predictability for New Brunswickers while we take the time to carefully review and improve the property tax system, so it is fair, transparent and works better for people across the province.”
New Brunswick’s overall assessment base for taxation – the total value for taxation of property assessments in the province – is $99.8 billion, an increase of 2.7 per cent or $2.7 billion since last year.
Service New Brunswick is responsible for the classification and assessment of all real property in the province. Property assessors use industry best practices in determining real and true market values of properties. The annual assessment base allows provincial and local governments to collect revenues to deliver services.
Property tax bills showing the amount owed for provincial and local taxes will be mailed March 2.
A property owner who disagrees with their assessed value may file a request for review, free of charge, online or by calling 1-888-762-8600. The deadline to file this request for the 2026 taxation year is Feb. 18.
