FREDERICTON (GNB) – New Brunswick joins the rest of Canada in celebrating Black History Month, marking 30 years of national recognition of the history, achievements and enduring contributions of Black Canadians.

“Black History Month is an opportunity to honour the histories, lived experiences and leadership of Black New Brunswickers,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Isabelle Thériault. “Throughout February, New Brunswickers are encouraged to take part in community-led events and activities that highlight the significant contributions that have helped shape our province’s rich history and culture.”

Across the province, exhibitions, public programming and cultural presentations hosted by post-secondary institutions, community organizations and cultural groups will celebrate and recognize the creativity, excellence and contributions of Black New Brunswickers. Such events will also highlight the ongoing work to remove barriers and strengthen inclusion in New Brunswick’s communities and institutions.

“Establishing the anti-racism office shows our commitment to being an active ally to the Black community,” said Post-Secondary Education and Training Minister Jean-Claude D’Amours. “Racism has no place in New Brunswick, and we will do our part to make our province inclusive for everyone.”
