FREDERICTON (GNB) – Updated drinking water quality guidelines are now in effect, aligning New Brunswick’s standards with those established by Health Canada.

“As environmental conditions and population needs evolve, drinking water quality guidelines must be reviewed and revised to remain effective,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage. “New Brunswickers should have dependable access to clean drinking water and have confidence it is safe.”

“As the science evolves, so does the need to update our drinking water guidelines to ensure we are protecting the health of New Brunswickers and strengthening public trust in our water systems,” said Dr. Yves Léger, the chief medical officer of health.

People can now access drinking water quality data collected by their local government through a new portal. This is intended to increase transparency and provide confidence to the public that their drinking water is safe and well managed. The launch of this portal fulfils a recommendation from A Water Strategy for New Brunswick 2018-2028 to make drinking water quality monitoring results for local governments available to the public.

“Our government has made a commitment to guarantee the right to clean water for all New Brunswickers,” said LePage.

Environment and Local Government led engagement with water system owners last fall concerning drinking water as part of the department’s mandate to modernize the Clean Water Act.
