FREDERICTON (GNB) – An educational resource is now available online to help local governments and individuals better understand and plan for the risks associated with flooding.

“It is important to encourage flood preparedness and resilience,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage. “Strong communities are informed communities, and flood education helps us understand natural hazards and guide safer choices.”

The online course – Protecting New Brunswick Homes from Flooding and Erosion Risk – is available to anyone who wants to better understand flood risks and preparedness. The course features short, informative videos and a floodproofing guide that contain practical steps a person can take to protect his or her property and loved ones.

This initiative fulfils Action 22(a) in the government’s climate change action plan, which aims to improve the public’s understanding and awareness of climate change risks.

"Flooding is one of the key climate risks identified in the climate change risk assessment, and it calls for a unified, co-ordinated response,” said LePage. “When communities work together, planning, preparing and supporting one another, we strengthen our ability to reduce risk, protect lives and recover faster.”
