NEW MARYLAND (GNB) – The provincial, federal and municipal governments are investing a combined $2.6 million to upgrade wastewater infrastructure that will support new housing development in New Maryland.
“This investment is about building the infrastructure our communities need to grow and thrive,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “By modernizing wastewater systems and supporting new development in New Maryland, we are creating more housing opportunities, improving essential services and strengthening the foundation for long-term regional growth.”
The project includes construction of a new sewer pumping station and force main in the Forbes subdivision to redirect wastewater flows from an older system to a modern treatment facility.
These upgrades will support a 497-unit, mixed-use development on a 14-hectare property owned by the village. The project will feature diverse housing and amenities while improving housing access, efficiency in the wastewater system and environmental sustainability.
“This investment in modern wastewater infrastructure is an important step in supporting our community’s continued expansion and the Government of Canada’s dedication to help solve the housing crisis”, said Fredericton-Oromocto MP David Myles. “Projects like this ensure that, as our community grows, the essential infrastructure that supports it grows, too, creating space for new housing, local businesses and a strong, sustainable future.”
Myles attended for federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson.
The provincial government, through the Regional Development Corporation, is providing $881,282 for the project, while the federal government is contributing $1,322,055 and the municipality is providing $440,773.
“The Forbes wastewater pumping station project will be the catalyst for a greater variety of lifespan-oriented housing options, aging-care facilities and professional service amenities previously unavailable in our village,” said New Maryland Mayor Judy Wilson-Shee. “We are very grateful for the financial and strategic support of our federal and provincial partners.”
