FREDERICTON (GNB) – Ice-fishing shelters must be removed from all provincial waterways at the first sign of thaw, and no later than March 15.
“With warmer weather approaching, it is necessary that ice-fishing shelter owners remain vigilant and take timely action to remove their structures,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage. “Fluctuating and rising temperatures can quickly weaken ice conditions, creating significant safety risks. Owners are urged to monitor ice stability closely and act responsibly by removing shelters at the earliest signs of deterioration. Proactive measures not only protect personal property but also help ensure the safety of others and preserve the integrity of our waterways.”
It is important to note that winter fishing season is open until March 31.
Owners are required to remove their shelters by the deadline to prevent garbage and debris from ending up in the province's waterways and creating a risk to the environment. They must also remove all trash and debris. Ice fishers have an obligation not to harm the environment.
This annual order is made in accordance with Subsection 15(7) of the Water Quality Regulation of the Clean Environment Act.
"Our priority is to ensure that no materials left on the ice make their way into our rivers, bays and lakes,” said LePage. “We are asking everyone to take all equipment and belongings with them and do their part to protect the cleanliness of our province. By working together, we can safeguard our waterways and ensure clean, healthy water for everyone to enjoy throughout the year.”
Signs are posted at popular ice-fishing sites to remind shelter owners to follow the regulations and to properly maintain their shelter until the end of the fishing season.
The department encourages all New Brunswickers to be responsible stewards of the environment, and to report any infraction of environmental regulations.
