FREDERICTON(GNB) – Applications will be accepted next month for a scholarship for current and former youth in care.

“Our post-secondary sector offers some of the best education in the world, and we want to ensure everyone has the chance to choose that journey if they wish to take it,” said Post-Secondary Education and Training Minister Jean-Claude D’Amours. “With this scholarship, we can help even more New Brunswick students pursue their passions through studies.”

The New Brunswick Youth in Care Scholarship was granted to 104 students during the 2025-26 academic year. It is meant for people under the age of 26 who, for at least one year, cumulatively, are or were:

  • in the care of the minister of social development
  • clients of Youth Engagement and Young Adult Services
  • in kinship care
  • in the care of their community (Indigenous youth)

Youth who have been adopted while in the care of the minister are eligible, as well.

The scholarship covers the tuition and mandatory fees for full- or part-time New Brunswick students working toward a certification, diploma or degree at an accredited post-secondary institution in the province.

“This scholarship reflects our commitment to supporting youth in care as they pursue their education and future goals,” said Social Development Minister Cindy Miles. “By investing in their potential, we are helping them build confidence and create brighter opportunities for themselves and for New Brunswick.”

The scholarship was overseen by the New Brunswick Community College Foundation for the 2025-26 academic year, and this will continue for 2026-27. The scholarship is a collaboration between the departments of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour and Social Development, with funding and support being provided by both departments.

“The right to education is a key feature of the Child and Youth Well-Being Act, and the introduction of a scholarship for youth in care will be a key contributor to their long-term success,” said John Sharpe, executive director of Partners for Youth. “We believe every youth is valuable and we are confident this investment in their futures will open doors to opportunity and hope.”

Among those not eligible for the scholarship are students in master's, PhD or postgraduate courses or programs, as well as Adult Basic Education or Adult Special Education.
