FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has announced that the budget for the Agriculture Road Program will be more than doubled to help support the farming sector.
“Any way our department can help support New Brunswick’s farming sector is a worthwhile endeavour,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Chuck Chiasson. “Our transportation network needs to support all industries. Making sure roads frequented by farm vehicles and machinery are maintained and safe helps to strengthen our province’s agricultural sector.”
This program is aimed at improving public non-maintained roads for use by farmers.
The program’s budget, which in recent years had been set at $100,000, will be increased to $250,000 in 2026-27. These funds will cover minor upgrades, which include improving drainage systems, enhancing base materials and grading. The program operates in partnership with the Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick and the Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries.
“New Brunswick’s agriculture sector depends on safe, reliable infrastructure, and we are pleased to see this program continue to support our farmers,” said Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Pat Finnigan. “This funding will help ensure that roads utilized by producers are properly maintained and upgraded, allowing them to move goods and equipment safely and efficiently from their fields to storage or markets. Well-maintained roads not only protect valuable farm equipment and reduce costs but also improves safety for everyone on our roadways. Investments like this strengthen our rural communities and help keep our agriculture industry productive, competitive and resilient.”
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure collaborates with the alliance on other endeavours, such as assisting with the striping process and adding signage for farm roads.
“If New Brunswick farmers are being looked at to drastically increase production in the next 10 years, they need the roads to get there,” said Danielle Connell, president of the Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick. “The alliance, industry, and the government have all identified farmland optimization as a top priority and that means ensuring producers can safely access and work that land. Investments like this by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure are fundamental to the future of agriculture in our province.”
Requests for upgrades through the Agriculture Road Program can be submitted to either Transportation and Infrastructure or the alliance. The requester does not have to be a member of the alliance, but the upgrade must be related to agricultural activities.
