FREDERICTON (GNB) – Following the close of nominations today, elections will be held on Monday, May 11, to form local government councils, rural district advisory committees and district education councils.
In total, 1,103 candidates submitted nomination papers for the 599 council positions that exist within the 77 local governments. Two council positions in two communities remained vacant at the close of nominations.
Elections will be held for 52 mayoral positions, while 25 mayors were acclaimed. Elections will decide 211 councillor contests, with another 136 seats being filled by acclamation.
Elections will be required in five of the 12 rural district advisory committees. Twenty-six positions were filled by acclamation, while four remained vacant, with no candidates running.
Sixty-three candidates filed nomination papers for the 68 district education council positions. Eleven contests had more than one candidate offering, meaning elections will take place. Eighteen positions remained vacant at the close of nominations.
Candidates have until 5 p.m. on Monday to withdraw.
Any remaining vacant council positions will be filled during byelections this fall. Vacant positions on rural district advisory committees and district education councils will be filled by ministerial appointments.
