CARAQUET (GNB) – The provincial, federal and municipal governments are investing nearly $4.8 million to improve water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure that will support a new residential subdivision in Caraquet.

“Investing in essential infrastructure is key to supporting housing development and building strong, sustainable communities,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “By supporting this project, we are helping create the conditions needed to build more homes, attract new residents and ensure Caraquet can continue to grow and thrive.”

The provincial government, through the Regional Development Corporation, is providing $1.59 million for the project, while the federal government is contributing $2.39 million and the municipality is investing more than $799,000.

The project includes the extension of Comeau and de la Gare streets, along with the installation of water mains and wastewater and stormwater infrastructure. It also includes construction of a new street and the installation of 22 fire hydrants.

“This investment in Caraquet’s municipal infrastructure will help create more homes while building stronger, more sustainable communities,” said Acadie-Bathurst MP Serge Cormier. “By supporting modern water and wastewater systems and enabling a new housing development, the federal government is taking concrete action to address housing needs and improve quality of life for residents. Projects like this reflect our commitment to working with partners to build resilient communities for today and for future generations.”

Cormier attended for federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson.

The upgrades will support development of a new subdivision with 125 homes, helping to address housing needs and support population growth in the region.

“The Town of Caraquet feels privileged to be able to rely on this partnership with the federal and provincial governments,” said Mayor Bernard Thériault. “It enables us to build hundreds of homes, which our community needs.”

“Our government has made housing a priority, and this investment in Caraquet is a concrete example of that commitment,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Isabelle Thériault. “By supporting the development of essential infrastructure, we are giving this community the tools it needs to build more housing and better meet the needs of residents. I am proud to see our governments working together to support growth and build a sustainable future for our region.”
