FREDERICTON (GNB) – The government has outlined how its departments will work together to reduce barriers and improve accessibility over the next three years.
This follows the release last fall of a broader, five-year strategic plan on accessibility to create a more inclusive province, inside and outside government.
“This is another first for us in the journey to a more accessible New Brunswick,” said Post-Secondary Education and Training Minister Jean-Claude D’Amours. “This is not something we can do alone, and this plan shows how we are going to work with other departments to make this happen.”
The government’s plan, which was built with input from people who have experienced barriers, has five goals:
· Make government spaces more accessible.
· Ensure New Brunswickers can receive information and communicate with government in accessible ways.
· Build capacity for government to identify, prevent and remove barriers.
· Make it easier for people to apply for and interact with government services.
· Introduce changes to reduce barriers people have experienced.
An interdepartmental committee will implement the plan and monitor progress. Updates will be provided annually by each department.
“Accessibility benefits everyone,” said D’Amours. “Removing barriers helps create a New Brunswick where all people can fully take part in daily life. Progress will take time, but we are committed to meaningful change.”
