FREDERICTON (GNB) – Work is underway to add 120 long-term care beds in Fredericton.
A multimillion-dollar expansion project will add capacity to Shannex’s Neill and Medley halls to better serve seniors in the region.
“Today represents an important milestone in improving access to care for seniors across New Brunswick, while helping families stay close and connected,” said Premier Susan Holt. “We are committed to moving seniors out of hospital and into supportive places to call home.”
The government has committed to adding 240 nursing home beds at sites operated by Shannex in the next two years.
“It is important for seniors to have access to the care and support they need,” said Seniors Minister Lyne Chantal Boudreau. “This project shows our commitment to providing them with safe, comfortable and welcoming spaces so they can feel well and keep a good quality of life.”
The expansion is part of the government’s recently unveiled strategy, Stronger Care for Seniors: A Long-Term Care Plan for New Brunswick. Supported by a $993-million investment in the 2026-27 budget, the plan includes 624 new long-term care beds and other initiatives to strengthen long-term care services for seniors.
“These nursing homes will be thoughtfully designed communities in Fredericton, with proven design innovations that ensure quality care, dignity and comfort for every resident,” said Shannex president Jason Shannon. “Together with our provincial partners, we are focused on building these homes quickly to add much-needed nursing home capacity and meet the growing needs of older adults in New Brunswick.”
The expansion is expected to be completed by the summer of 2028.
