FREDERICTON (GNB) – Nominations open today for five local government byelections scheduled for June 22.

Byelections in Ward 3 of Saint Andrews and in Ward 2 of Grand Lake were ordered by the chief electoral officer after the death of candidates in those contests during the May 11 elections. The Municipal Elections Act required the elections for councillors in those two wards to be cancelled.

Byelections will also be held in two wards of Nashwaak. The chief electoral officer set aside the acclamation of the candidate in Ward 7 when it was determined an administrative error prevented another candidate’s nomination papers from being accepted by the municipal returning officer. There was a second existing vacancy in the same community, which the chief electoral officer determined would be filled during these byelections.

A fifth byelection was scheduled to fill a vacancy that remained following the close of nominations in Ward 2 of Grand-Bouctouche.

“As these are all new elections, anyone wishing to offer as a candidate in these byelections will have to follow the standard procedures of filling out nomination papers with the signatures of at least 10 nominators and filing them with the local municipal returning officer,” said chief electoral officer Kim Poffenroth.

Nominations for the byelections close at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 29.
