CAMPBELLTON (GNB) – A coroner’s inquest into the death of Jean-Martin Couture will be held July 6-8 at the Campbellton courthouse, 157 Water St.

Couture was an inmate being held in custody at the Dalhousie Regional Correctional Centre. He died at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre on Sept. 25, 2025, after being found unresponsive in his cell.

Deputy chief coroner Emily Caissy and a jury will publicly hear evidence from witnesses to determine facts surrounding the death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.

An inquest is a formal court proceeding that allows for the public presentation of all evidence relating to a death. The New Brunswick Coroner Service is an independent fact-finding agency that may not make any finding of legal responsibility.

The first day of the inquest is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with jury selection.
