CAMPBELLTON (GNB) – The provincial, federal and municipal governments are investing more than $1.1 million in water and sewer infrastructure upgrades to support housing development in Campbellton.

“Our government is investing in communities where strong infrastructure is essential to building the housing our communities need,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “These upgrades will improve water services for residents while creating the capacity needed for new housing development, helping Campbellton grow and meet future demand.”

The project involves replacing several hundred metres of water mains and storm sewer mains, along with catch basins, on Notre Dame Street. The work will also connect water distribution systems between wards and improve water quality.

“By upgrading and connecting our water distribution systems, we are improving water quality and reliability for residents while creating the capacity needed for new housing,” said Madawaska-Restigouche MP Guillaume Deschênes-Thériault. “It's a strong example of how the federal government’s strategic infrastructure investments can strengthen our neighbourhoods and support sustainable growth for years to come.”

Deschênes-Thériault attended for federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson.

The provincial government, through the Regional Development Corporation, is investing more than $374,000 in the project. The federal government is contributing more than $561,000 through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund and the city is investing more than $187,000.

The upgrades will increase water flow to enable up to 200 new housing units, including a proposed 60-unit apartment building.

“Today marks an important step forward for our community,” said Campbellton Mayor Michel Soucy. “Through these strategic investments, we are replacing a 50-year-old water main with modern, higher-capacity infrastructure and upgrading our storm sewer system to support residential growth. These improvements will significantly increase water flow, enabling proposed apartment buildings and future development to move ahead. Most importantly, this project will help deliver approximately 200 new housing units, reinforcing our commitment to addressing housing needs while building a stronger, more sustainable community for years to come.”
