Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion

FREDERICTON (GNB) – New Brunswickers are invited to join Canadians from coast to coast in celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Founded in 1925 and officially incorporated by an act of Parliament on July 17, 1926, the legion has spent the past 100 years advocating for veterans, serving military members and their families, promoting remembrance and strengthening communities.

“As the Royal Canadian Legion celebrates its centennial year, New Brunswickers proudly join all Canadians in honouring an organization that has stood beside veterans and their families for a century,” said Premier Susan Holt. “For 100 years, legion members have championed remembrance, supported those who served our country, and enriched communities large and small. On behalf of the people of New Brunswick, I extend our sincere gratitude to the legion and its volunteers for their unwavering commitment and service.”

Across New Brunswick, legion branches play a vital role by preserving Canada's military heritage and promoting remembrance. Their work strengthens communities and helps ensure future generations understand the sacrifices made in service to the country, said Holt.

As part of its commitment to recognizing veterans and their contributions, the provincial government will modernize the veterans’ licence plate in partnership with the New Brunswick Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. This updated design will continue to honour veterans while reflecting the significance of military service and remembrance for future generations. More details about the updated design and implementation timeline will be shared in the coming months.

“The legion’s centenary is an opportunity to celebrate a remarkable legacy and reaffirm our commitment to veterans, active military members, and seniors who have contributed so much to our province and country,” said Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Jean-Claude D’Amours, who is also minister responsible for military affairs. “Their service, leadership and experiences continue to make New Brunswick stronger.”

Throughout its centennial year, the legion is marking this milestone with commemorative events and activities across Canada. New Brunswickers are encouraged to take part in local celebrations and recognize the contributions of legion members, veterans, and military families in their communities.
