Infrastructure funding to support housing development in Fredericton

FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial, federal and municipal governments are investing more than $23.5 million in water, stormwater and wastewater infrastructure to support housing development in Fredericton.

“Strong communities are built on the infrastructure that allows them to grow,” said Luke Randall, minister responsible for Opportunities NB. “This investment will extend essential services into Fredericton’s newest neighbourhood, opening the door to new housing opportunities while supporting the city’s long-term growth and economic development.”

Randall spoke on behalf of Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

The project will extend infrastructure along Doak Road; several kilometres of water and sewer pipes will be installed, a new water reservoir and booster station will be built, and the Wilsey Road lift station will be upgraded.

“Building more homes starts with providing the right infrastructure that makes new housing possible,” said Fredericton-Oromocto MP David Myles. “By investing in essential water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure in Fredericton, we are creating the conditions for sustainable growth. This investment will help increase housing supply, improve affordability and ensure more Canadians have access to the homes they need.”

The provincial government, through the Regional Development Corporation, is contributing more than $7.8 million for the project, while the federal government is investing more than $9.4 million through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund. The City of Fredericton is contributing more than $6.3 million.

The new infrastructure will facilitate development on 44 hectares of city-owned land. This will enable construction of more than 1,300 new homes, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartment buildings, supporting the city’s population growth targets.

“This funding agreement is an important step forward in preparing the infrastructure needed for Fredericton’s growth,” said Mayor Steve Hicks. “We are grateful for the support from the federal and provincial governments as we work to extend water, wastewater and storm sewer infrastructure to the city’s southeast new neighbourhood. Aligned with the City of Fredericton’s municipal plan, this critical work will help unlock new opportunities for housing, strengthen connectivity within our community, and ensure we are planning responsibly for the city’s future.”
