MONCTON (GNB) – A new affordable housing development for vulnerable seniors in Moncton is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
The new 30-unit complex, built in partnership with Rising Tide and the City of Moncton, features one-bedroom units that will improve access to safe, affordable housing for seniors. Six of the units will be accessible.
“Our government recognizes the housing crisis is felt acutely in the Moncton area, and we are committed to tackling our housing challenges head-on,” said David Hickey, minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “Projects like this help to reduce the housing wait-list and create new affordable options for New Brunswickers.”
The provincial government has invested nearly $2.4 million in the development through the Affordable Rental Housing Program. This guarantees the creation of basic affordable units that will rent at or below the average market cost for comparable housing.
The federal government is contributing more than $6.5 million to the project through its Affordable Housing Fund while the municipal government is adding $600,000.
“The project we are officially announcing today will make a real difference for people here in Moncton,” said Moncton-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor. “Every project like this one draws us closer to the country we want to build – one where everyone has access to a safe and affordable place to call home.”
Petitpas Taylor attended for federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson.
The corporation is working with municipalities across the province to help expand affordable housing options in their regions.
