New public housing developments adding 13 units for families in Fredericton, Oromocto

FREDERICTON (GNB) – New public housing developments are improving access to safe, affordable housing for families in the Fredericton region.

A 10-unit complex in Fredericton is nearly completed. The eight three-bedroom and two two-bedroom units will be ready for tenants in the coming weeks.

“We are focused on building public housing at a rate never before seen in this province,” said David Hickey, minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “This project, and the others being built across the province, are rebuilding the foundation of affordable housing New Brunswickers need.”

This new development uses modular construction, which is growing in popularity around the province. Components are built off-site using local materials, and standards remain consistent.

Hickey also announced three two-bedroom townhouse units in Oromocto were recently acquired by the housing corporation, helping provide greater access to affordable housing in that community.

There are more than 4,600 public housing units across the province, with work underway on others.

Since the New Brunswick Housing Corporation was re-established as a Crown corporation in 2023, it has built 200 new public housing units; it has 58 others in progress, with 150 more in the design phase.

The corporation is working with municipalities across the province to determine their affordable housing needs.
