Premier attending Council of the Federation meetings in Charlottetown

FREDERICTON (GNB) – Premier Susan Holt will join Canada's other premiers in Charlottetown today through Thursday for the annual Council of the Federation meetings.

The provincial and territorial leaders will focus on strengthening Canada's economy, advancing nation-building projects, improving internal trade and building more resilient infrastructure to ensure the country has the energy it needs to support economic growth for decades to come.

“Canada needs more power, and New Brunswick is ready to help deliver it,” said Holt. “We are home to Canada's first nuclear generating station, we're preparing for the next generation of nuclear energy, and we're strengthening the electricity connections that will help move reliable, affordable power where Canadians need it most. New Brunswick has the expertise, infrastructure and ambition to help power Canada's future.”

Holt will push for New Brunswick's priorities throughout the meetings, including:

• Growing Canada's clean electricity supply by building on New Brunswick's leadership in nuclear energy, including opportunities at Point Lepreau and preparations for a second nuclear power site.
• Strengthening electricity interties to build a more connected, reliable and resilient Canadian grid.
• Positioning New Brunswick as Canada's Maritime energy hub by strengthening electricity infrastructure and improving connections to domestic and international markets.
• Advancing nation-building projects that support long-term economic growth and Canada's energy security, including strategic investments in assets such as the Mactaquac and Belledune generating stations.
• Growing opportunities in the defence, cybersecurity and advanced manufacturing sectors while supporting Canada's evolving security needs.
• Removing barriers to economic growth and strengthening internal trade across Canada.

The agenda will also include discussions with national Indigenous organization leaders, working sessions among premiers and a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney.

“Canada's future depends on reliable electricity,” said Holt. “No province can build that future alone. By working together to strengthen our grid, expand clean electricity generation and invest in the infrastructure that connects us, we can create good jobs, attract investment and build a stronger Canada.”

The Council of the Federation brings together Canada's 13 provincial and territorial premiers to collaborate on shared priorities and strengthen the federation.

Holt will participate in the council’s closing news conference on Thursday. Further details will be provided by the council.
