CHARLOTTETOWN (GNB) – Premier Susan Holt joined her provincial and territorial colleagues in signing a memorandum of understanding to enhance accessibility and reduce barriers for Canadians with disabilities.
The agreement supports provinces and territories working together, and with the federal government, to align standards. Holt said the memorandum aligns with objectives of New Brunswick’s Accessibility Act and the government’s five-year plan to implement the legislation.
“Our government is committed to improving accessibility for all New Brunswickers and ensuring those with disabilities can fully enjoy life in our province,” said Holt. “With this memorandum of understanding, we are committing to work together towards the goal of a Canada that is barrier-free for all.”
During the signing of the memorandum, the premiers recognized the leadership and example set by Rick Hansen, the internationally renowned advocate for people with disabilities. In 1986, Hansen launched the Man in Motion World Tour, travelling more than 40,000 kilometres across 34 countries in his wheelchair to raise awareness of the potential of those with disabilities and calling for the removal of barriers to inclusion.
