SAINT JOHN (GNB) – A new development in Saint John will soon improve access to safe, affordable housing for people facing chronic homelessness.
The 12-unit complex, which has been in development since last year, is nearing completion and expected to open this fall. These units will provide vulnerable women with safe, secure environments to help rebuild independence.
The initiative is funded in collaboration with the federal government, the City of Saint John and community partners. The provincial government has invested $840,000 through the Affordable Rental Housing Program, which allows for the creation of basic affordable units that would rent at or below the average market cost for comparable housing.
“Waterloo Village has watched the housing crisis unfold on its streets,” said David Hickey, minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “The status quo is unacceptable and all levels of government need to be responding with the urgency it deserves. This announcement is an important step towards that.”
In total, the Saint John Human Development Council, the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception and the three levels of government have combined to invest more than $3.7 million in the project.
On-site services will be provided to tenants through a “housing first” and harm reduction approach. Services such as transitional support, budgeting assistance, basic health care and mental health support will be available year-round upon request.
“Our government is focused on delivering housing for the people of Saint John and across the country,” said Saint John-Kennebecasis MP Wayne Long. “Supporting the House of Merritt is one of the ways we do that. I’m proud of our involvement in this project, and of the tangible difference it will make for people in this community.”
