MONCTON (GNB) – The federal and provincial governments have reached a bilateral infrastructure agreement that will allocate more than $461 million to priority projects in the province, including $155 million for health-related infrastructure.

“New Brunswickers deserve to get the right care, in the right place, when they need it, and that means making sure our health-care teams have the facilities and equipment they need to provide that care,” said Premier Susan Holt. “This investment will help us expand and modernize health-care infrastructure, including at Georges-L.-Dumont, while creating more opportunities to build affordable housing. By working with our federal partners, we are building the capacity we need to deliver better care closer to home and make life more affordable for New Brunswickers.”

The first health infrastructure project being funded is at Moncton’s Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre, Vitalité Health Network's largest hospital. It will receive $25.7 million for endoscopy modernization and expansion, as well as $1 million for planning activities to support a broader redevelopment concept and future infrastructure requirements.

“This agreement marks an important step forward in building the infrastructure New Brunswick needs to meet the needs of tomorrow,” said federal Internal Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc. “Canada and New Brunswick are making strategic investments that will help unlock new housing, strengthen post-secondary education and support modern, reliable health infrastructure. By investing in the expansion and modernization of the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre, we are helping build a stronger health-care system that New Brunswickers can rely on for years to come.”

LeBlanc spoke on behalf of federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson.

“The Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre plays an essential role in the delivery of specialized care in New Brunswick and in training the next generation of health-care professionals,” said Dr. France Desrosiers, president and CEO of Vitalité Health Network. “We are pleased with the commitment of the provincial and federal governments to invest in its modernization. These investments will support the transformation of our infrastructure to improve care environments, increase our capacity and better meet the growing needs of the population.”

“Investing in modern health-care infrastructure is an important part of improving the care New Brunswickers receive,” said Health Minister John Dornan. “This funding will allow us to upgrade and expand health-care facilities across the province so our health-care professionals have the spaces and equipment they need to provide high-quality care."

The money comes from the Build Communities Strong Fund, which was announced as part of the 2025 federal budget. The $51-billion, 10-year infrastructure initiative is designed to support housing, health care, education, climate adaptation and core community infrastructure across the country.

“Today’s announcement is good news for communities right across the province,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “By partnering with the federal government through the Build Communities Strong Fund, the province can continue to invest in essential municipal infrastructure, promote housing development, and support the needs of New Brunswick residents now and in the future.”

“To build new homes, we need the infrastructure in the ground, and this investment will unlock new opportunities to tackle the housing crisis,” said David Hickey, the minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “In the face of this housing shortage, we are building to ensure everyone has access to a safe, affordable place to live.”
