OROMOCTO (GNB) – Oromocto is getting a new wastewater treatment facility to support housing development, as part of a $16.2-million investment by the provincial, municipal and federal governments.

“Investing in the infrastructure needed to support housing growth is essential as communities like Oromocto plan for the future,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “This project will help expand wastewater capacity in Oromocto and support new housing, while strengthening the infrastructure needed to accommodate growth in a community that is home to Canada’s second-largest military base.”

The funding will support the design and construction of a lift station and associated infrastructure to transfer wastewater from the town’s west side to the new treatment facility at Base Gagetown.

“This project is about more than wastewater infrastructure; it’s about creating the capacity for Oromocto to grow and welcome new residents,” said Fredericton-Oromocto MP David Myles. “By investing in essential infrastructure today, we are helping communities prepare for future housing development and ensuring that growth is supported by the services people need.”

Myles attended for federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson.

The provincial government is providing $5.4 million through the Regional Development Corporation, while the federal government is contributing $8.1 million and the town is investing $2.7 million.

The Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund is designed to help communities build the infrastructure needed to support more homes and increase housing density. The funding can be used for projects that improve drinking water, wastewater and stormwater systems, as well as initiatives that preserve existing capacity, enhance system reliability, or implement waste diversion measures to reduce landfill use.

“This funding announcement marks an important milestone for the Town of Oromocto and reflects a shared commitment to building a stronger, more sustainable future,” said Oromocto Mayor Robert Powell. “Investing in modern infrastructure is essential to supporting population growth, enabling economic development and protecting the environment. Through this partnership with the federal and provincial governments, we can undertake critical infrastructure improvements that would otherwise place significant financial pressure on local taxpayers. We are grateful for this investment and for the continued collaboration of our government partners in helping to ensure Oromocto remains a vibrant and resilient community for years to come.”

The provincial government’s economic development strategy identifies defence-related industries as a sector with competitive advantages and growing global demand. With Oromocto planning for growth, investments in infrastructure aim to ensure necessary services are in place to support future development.
