RIVERVIEW (GNB) – The government is expanding long-term care capacity with the creation of 40 beds at an adult residential facility in Riverview.

The beds at Grass Home are being established through the government’s expression-of-interest process for the creation of 360 long-term care beds. This is one of the first projects selected through this process.

“Our focus is on making sure New Brunswickers get the right care, in the right place, at the right time,” said Premier Susan Holt. “These new beds will give seniors in Riverview and the surrounding area access to the care they need closer to home, while helping reduce pressure on our hospitals and ensuring people can move out of hospital and into the appropriate care setting.”

Grass Home currently has 60 beds across two sites in Riverview. The 40 new beds will be generalist care beds, supporting seniors who have greater difficulty getting around and managing daily activities such as bathing, dressing and eating. This care is also generally appropriate for people in the early stages of dementia.

The addition of these beds will help reduce pressure on hospitals by ensuring seniors can access the long-term care they need close to home.

“Growing long-term care capacity will help ensure seniors have access to the right kind of care as their needs change, while supporting their dignity and well-being,” said Seniors Minister Lyne Chantal Boudreau. “These Level 3G beds will provide an important option for seniors who need more support with daily activities, helping us build a stronger continuum of care for New Brunswick’s aging population.”

The project is part of the government’s commitment to increase long-term care capacity and improve access to high-quality care for seniors across New Brunswick.

“We are honoured to partner with the province to expand long-term care capacity right here in Riverview,” said Ben Grass, executive vice-president of Grass Home. “For more than four decades, our family has been committed to providing seniors with compassionate, home-like care that supports their dignity and quality of life. These 40 new Level 3G beds will allow more families in our community to keep their loved ones close to home, surrounded by the personalized support and sense of belonging that define Grass Home. We look forward to welcoming new residents and continuing to brighten lives for years to come.”

The government requested expressions of interest in establishing 360 long-term care beds as part of its seniors and long-term care plan. It is evaluating proposals and advancing projects as they become ready, rather than waiting for the full process to conclude, with the goal of getting new beds operational as quickly as possible for those who need them.

As part of the $993-million investment in the seniors and long-term care plan, the addition of these 360 beds represents an annual investment of about $90 million in long-term care. The plan also includes measures to improve access to long-term care, strengthen community and caregiver supports, help seniors age comfortably at home and improve residential long-term care options.
