Community transportation

A network of non-profit organizations offering equitable community transportation solutions when no affordable and accessible service is available in a community.

Overview

The service is a network of non-profit organizations offering equitable community transportation solutions when no affordable and accessible service is available in a community. Drivers are volunteers and are reimbursed for their mileage.

It’s calculated on the number of kilometers driven. It’s much less than a commercial ride. Cost may vary in different regions of the province.

Eligibility

Open to anyone who needs a drive to access essential services such as for medical appointments, visits to government offices, trips to the grocery store, pharmacy or bank, to work or for training.

You can be referred by a community non-profit agency/organization or you can apply as an individual. There can be more than one person travelling with you but all passengers, including children, must be registered.

Note that services differ from region to region.

Volunteer

To become a volunteer, contact your local community transportation service. Volunteer drivers must meet all screening criteria including a criminal record check and social development check.

Note that:

  • safety is a priority
  • scheduling is flexible so you can volunteer as much or as little as you want
  • there is no long-term commitment
  • volunteers use their own vehicle and are reimbursed for mileage
