What we do

The Department of Environment and Local Government is responsible for protecting and enhancing the province’s environment and fostering vibrant and strong communities. We oversee environmental planning, zoning, consultation and enforcement activities including effective enforcement of environmental legislation and regulations.We are also responsible for working with local governments, including municipalities and regional service commissions, to provide advice and guidance on governance issues.   

Responsibilities

  • Providing approvals and permits for activities impacting the environment, such as land reclamation and watercourse alterations.
  • Providing permits, licences, and fees related to animal control, including dogs.
  • Providing permits and assessments related to water supply, quality, and well drilling.
  • Funding infrastructure development for municipalities and communities and providing grants and support for rural infrastructure.
  • Managing fees, licenses, and permits for pet related services and establishments.
  • Overseeing permits and licenses for pesticide applicators, operators, and vendors.
  • Initiating waste management programs for recycling and proper disposal of various materials. 

Priorities

  • Support and promote programs that protect our environment and our residents.
  • Continue to work towards the goals and objectives outlined within the climate change action plan.
  • Support innovation in clean technology with the help of beneficial partnerships.
  • Continue to develop the provincial land use planning framework and work with local governments to help them develop community-specific plans.
