What we do
The Department of Health is responsible for supporting excellence in health care to ensure a healthy New Brunswick. We work with regional health authorities and partners like professional and regulatory organizations to support access to services so patients can access the health-care services they need, improve coordination of health-care services and provide people with access to information about their health.
Responsibilities
- Supporting high quality and accessible health-care services.
- Ensuring patients can access the right care, at the right time at the right place.
- Creating the conditions for wellness by supporting healthy living and disease prevention.
- Improving operational efficiency of the health-care system.
- Managing activities related to Medicare eligibility and claims, Medicare insured services, and payments to doctors.
- Overseeing the publicly funded drug programs like the New Brunswick Prescription Drug Program and the New Brunswick Drug Plan.
Priorities
- Connect more people with primary health care by increasing the number of doctors working in collaborative care practices.
- Work collaboratively with regional health authorities and other partners in the healthcare system to ensure a well-staffed system.
- Work with professional organizations to train more healthcare workers from New Brunswick improve the process for reviewing credentials earned in another country.
- Improve access to addictions and mental health services.
- Improve access to surgery by providing shorter wait times.
- Giving patients the option of accessing care sooner through initiatives that highlight wait times in different regions of the province for non-urgent diagnostic imaging and surgery procedures.
