What we do
The Department of Justice and Public Safety is responsible for keeping New Brunswickers safe and helping to ensure the impartial administration of justice. We are also responsible for overseeing emergency preparedness, delivering multiple inspections, licensing and registration programs, and for court services, correctional services and the Office of the Attorney General. We work with the judicial branch of government, police forces and with other levels of government.
Responsibilities
- Overseeing the training standards for new drivers, driving instructors, truck and bus drivers.
- Managing and administering provincial court services, correctional facilities, probation and parole services and rehabilitation programs.
- Providing support to victims of crime, including compensation, counseling, court preparation and referrals to other support services.
- Conducting outreach campaigns and educational programs to inform the public about safety and emergency preparedness.
- Planning, coordinating, and responding to emergencies, such as floods, wildfires, and public health crises.
- Regulating firearm training, possession and licensing to ensure responsible ownership.
- The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Unit investigating anonymous tips and co-ordinate municipal police and the RCMP.
- Licensing and inspecting a wide range of industries, products and services.
- Overseeing the Office of the Fire Marshal, sheriff services and 911.
- Prosecuting offences, drafting all the province’s laws and serving as the law firm of government.
Priorities
- Enhance access to justice and empower communities to foster safety, inclusion, and resilience.
- Provide the public with information on crime with the intention of reducing crime.
- Promoting road safety and responsible driving.
- Enhance fire prevention and training efforts to reduce the risk of fires.
