What we do
The Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development is responsible for protecting and managing the forests, fish and wildlife of New Brunswick. We are also responsible for overseeing the province’s energy and mineral resources. We are working with partners, stakeholders and subject matter experts to continue shaping the future of New Brunswick’s energy, mines, forestry, fish and wildlife sectors.
Responsibilities
- Supporting and regulating the development of various energy sources, including renewable energy projects, oil and gas, and electricity.
- Establishing policies and standards to promote energy efficiency and security.
- Managing public forests to balance environmental, economic, and social interests, including determining timber supplies and conserving biodiversity.
- Preventing, detecting and responding to wildfires.
- Authorizing the leasing and licensing and use of Crown lands.
- Licensing, permitting, and providing programs related to wildlife management, hunting, and fishing and trapping.
- Overseeing resource exploration and development, including oil and gas, mining, and geological exploration.
Priorities
- Ensure that Crown lands are managed for the long-term prosperity of New Brunswickers.
- Maintain biodiversity and mage lands while considering the threats of climate change.
- Create jobs and economic growth in the energy, forestry, fish and wildlife, and mining sectors.
- Transition the province to cleaner, renewable energy sources while ensuring a reliable and affordable energy supply.
