What we do
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is responsible for providing and supporting sustainable infrastructure that allows for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods. We are also responsible for the management of public infrastructure, issuing permits and licences, and overseeing the planning and maintenance of provincial highways and roads. We work with other government departments as well as outside stakeholders to contribute to New Brunswick’s economy and quality of life by providing transportation infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Planning, designing, constructing, operating and maintaining highways, bridges and culverts.
- Organizing snow and brush removal for highways and culverts.
- Providing oversight of the province’s mobile radio communication system and shortline railway operations.
- Managing commercial signage on provincial highways.
- Building and maintaining infrastructure to accommodate government services.
- Managing the provinces fleet vehicles.
- Overseeing the coastal ferry network in the province.
- Providing safe and reliable radio communications to government departments, agencies of the province and the RCMP.
Priorities
- Provide safe, reliable and sustainable public infrastructure that supports the needs of New Brunswickers.
- Pursue strategic partnership opportunities, including federal cost-shared funding for capital infrastructure projects.
- Implement highway initiatives to support public safety and the economic well-being of the province.
