What we do
Women’s Equality is responsible for promoting gender equality and reducing systematic discrimination. We are also responsible for providing advice and support to departments on advancing equality and for coordinating the implementation of the government’s initiatives regarding women’s personal, economic, and social security. We work with community groups, organizations, and other departments to encourage a comprehensive and collaborative approach to gender equality.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring the provision of support and services to women victims of gender-based violence.
- Addressing violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals.
- Implementing and overseeing initiatives in response to sexual violence prevention efforts.
- Monitoring and analyzing the gender wage gap and overseeing the implementation and enforcement of pay equity legislation and practices.
- Promoting the advancement of women in leadership roles and nontraditional careers.
- Promoting the integration of Gender-Based Analysis+ (GBA+) and gender budgeting into all decision-making and policymaking processes
- Developing gender-disaggregated reports on issues impacting New Brunswickers.
Priorities
- Raise awareness about gender equality issues and advocate for rights of women and gender diverse individuals.
- Lead New Brunswick’s implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) to End Gender-Based Violence.
- Coordinate New Brunswick’s response to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls - Weaving our Voices Together: New Brunswick’s Path to Safety for Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People.
- Renew Sexual Violence Prevention Framework.
- Complete domestic/intimate partner violence sector review in collaboration with Social Development.
