Book and Periodical Publishers Operational Support Program

Administered by the Arts and Culture Branch of the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture, the Book and Periodical Publishers Operational Support Program provides funding for eligible publishers to support the production and presentation of literary works.

An organization is eligible to apply if:

• It is a Canadian-owned publishing company of books and/or periodicals;
• Its head office is located in New Brunswick;
• It has been incorporated and operating for a minimum of one year;
• It operates year-round, as demonstrated by maintaining a minimum of one part-time staff position throughout the year, remunerated at industry standard rates;
• It offers the services of professional editorial staff, remunerated at industry standard rates;
• It has established professional methods of book distribution and established fee scales for contributors;
• The majority of its owners and administrators are residents of New Brunswick;
• Its regular program of publishing has included at least three Eligible Titles during the last fiscal year (see below definition of Eligible Titles);
• Its principal activity consists of publishing literary works in one or more of the following categories: Literary Fiction, Literary Non-fiction, Literary Essays, Drama, Poetry, Children’s/Young Adults Literature; 
• Its target market is the general public (as opposed to narrow niche markets);
• If a new applicant, it has positive net assets for the annual fiscal period immediately prior to application, demonstrated by providing financial statements per application requirements.
• If a non-profit organization, it has an active board of directors. 

Submitted applications are first screened by the Arts & Culture Program Officer to verify completeness and eligibility. Eligible applications are then evaluated by an independent jury against program criteria. Returning applicants are guaranteed a base amount equivalent to 80% of the previous cycle’s approved funding and enter the jury process for any additional amount.

The program is also open to new applicants, who are not guaranteed a base amount.

1. New applicants must first create their user profile by clicking on the “GUIDE Create your profile” button.
2. The portal will email the username and password for the applicant to log into the system and access program guidelines and application forms. Applicants must read the guidelines to ensure they are eligible to apply before creating an application.
