Professional and organizational development in museology program

Funds that enable institutions to offer training for their staff and volunteers.

Description

This two-part program will fund selected projects enabling institutions to offer professional and organizational development training for their staff, board members and volunteers, to help them better carry out their heritage and museum activities.

The coordinating organizations in zones around the province can also submit a proposal for the groups they represent.

Due to budget limitations, this program does not support attendance or participation at any training, webinars and conferences hosted or offered by the Association Heritage New Brunswick.

Objectives

Part 1: Professional development

Increase opportunities for museum and heritage non-profit organizations to enhance the professional skills of their employees, board members and volunteers.

Part 2: Organizational development

  • enhance the efficiency of boards of organizations working in the heritage sector to better fulfill their mandate
  • encourage the development of organizations working in the heritage and museum sector
  • assist with projects aimed at improving the financial stability of the organizations

For this program, a museum is a non-profit community institution that acts as a custodian to maintain, conserve, study and interpret a permanent collection of heritage resources. These resources may be objects or historical data. Such an organization holds its collection in trust for the public.

Deadline

Organizations may apply under either part of the program at any time throughout the year. This program does not fund activities that have already occurred, or which will occur prior to funding approval. Applications must be submitted at least six weeks prior to the start of the activity.

Level of funding

The financial contribution may attain 100% of eligible costs, to a maximum of $1,000 per institution. Please keep all receipts in case we ask to see them.

Depending on the number of applications, more than one request per institution per year may be considered, but the total amount cannot exceed the maximum per fiscal year.

Eligibility

The organization must be a registered non-profit organization based in New Brunswick and a heritage organization (museum, historical society, or heritage association) with no outstanding Professional and Organizational Development Program final reports.

Part 1: Professional development

The organization must demonstrate that the workshop, seminar or conference requested will increase the efficiency of staff and volunteers, enhance their skills and provide tools to better serve their communities.

Part 2: Organizational development

The organization must submit a proposal outlining the training needs of its board members. The application for training will describe why the session is needed at this time and how it would improve efficiency or change the course of the present management.

Project evaluation

The branch will review all applications submitted based on set criteria for each of the two parts of the program. Not all applications will necessarily be accepted, and this will depend, in part, on available funding.

Criteria Score
Importance of the proposed activity to the applicant’s professional development or the organization’s development as it relates to the organization’s mission and strategic plan 6
Willingness of organizations to improve their level and standard of operation 6
Evaluation process and knowledge transfer 6
Applicant’s ability to raise complementary funds towards the project
Quality of the training or development program 6
Networking and pooling of resources between museum organizations in the zone 3
The application is well-presented and the budget proposal is realistic 3
Total 33

Note: Projects scoring 50% and more will be considered for funding until the program budget is expended. Failure to approve an application does not necessarily constitute a negative judgment on its merits.

An organization that does not submit their final report on time will be deemed not in good standing and will not be eligible to apply for other funding until the outstanding final report has been received.
